What is Man's Purpose

By Dusty Farrell

Man is a being who is dependent on knowing himself, who he is and his purpose. He is driven to fit into structure on any level. Ancient man in the simplest of environments knew himself by how he related to his surroundings. Some groups, in name only, assumed the character traits of animals for example.

Today, we create many complicated levels of identity. Those may be based on the town and state where we live, the schools we attend, sports of any kind, political parties, professions, social clubs, talents, trades, skills, vocations, lack of any of the above, music preferences, religion, any sub-group thereof and the list goes to infinity. We will include many categories in our intricate structure requiring more resources in the support required to maintain each one. Some include a physical element related to physical condition as well, being too large or too small; too young or too old.

With each new addition we further isolate ourselves because of how we view and relate to others. This will vary in effects physically but mentally the internal conversation deepens with self condemnation as we concentrate on the overwhelming standards we created; or we may find a brief time of relief when our view exalts us above them.

Most people have identified themselves based on the overall content of their intellect which is shaky at best allowing us to be tossed by the winds of doctrines as James recorded. We have judged ourselves as inadequate resulting from comparisons to others of higher esteem leading to a revelation of our own shortcomings. These weaknesses we see and know result in our thinking we are just not good enough to be successful and we will surely fail. We want more control thinking it will give us peace but just leads to more fear.

We refuse to attempt to venture into the unknown; we are bound by our perceptions. Man fears the unknown but we know as well, our greatest opportunities await us there.

Extreme success is a threat to our current way of life. I have experienced this condition myself. Moving upward financially, for instance, may alienate friends and result in a feeling of being alone. We fear criticism for daring to step out of line relative to present social structure, particularly at church.

We have accumulated all the information we can find to support our views and in many instances made change very difficult. Knowing Jesus and our Christian doctrines can add even more stress to our self doubts. When we began our life with the Lord we hope for relief from such stress which is created by demands from well meaning individuals who only heaped more burden upon us from the already overloaded lists of do’s and don’ts.

Identification is impossible without access to and knowing a true source of origin or a clear standard for comparison.

We have not understood this condition whereby we struggle for peace is founded on the failure to know what we are before trying to have a meaningful and stable true identity. Searching for understanding of this concept may be the greatest obstacle; we should realize we only need see ourselves as we are seen by our Creator.

The truth we fear is our glorious capabilities by far exceed the weaknesses which hold us in bondage. We fear we really are like Him. The good news, we are not identified by our education or the lack thereof, nor the social makeup where we are most accustomed. Our Father alone reveals the nature of His children. Let us all seek and then focus on the traits in us which are consistent with His nature and personality.

Those will be a realm of spirit being not clouded by opposing ideals but which exist in Light. These traits are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control. Do they describe the personality of Jesus? When He related to people did these characteristics apply to Him? He told His disciples, “If you have seen Me you have seen the Father.” What else could they have seen?
